Battlefield Guide- Yorkshire Trench
Yorkshire Trench was built by engineers of the 49th (West Riding) Division in 1915, and was at that time a front line position on the lower slopes of the Pilckem Ridge close to the village of Boesinghe. In the opening stages of the Third Battle of Ypres the 38th (Welsh) Division attacked from here. The site was the scene of much archaeological work by The Diggers and featured in the BBC Meet The Ancestors special, 'Forgotten Battlefield'. The site has been preserved using concreted sandbags, and walkways map out the old French trenches and dugout system beneath the site. There are extensive information panels, and the site is open all year round.
