Battlefield Guide - Spanbroekmolen
Spanbroekmolen was a small hamlet with a windmill ('molen') that sat on the slopes of the Messines Ridge. It was taken by the Germans in 1914 and turned into a strongpoint. Major Cropper's 250th Tunnelling Company Royal Engineers destroyed it with a 90,000 lb charge on the morning of 7th June 1917 when it was captured by the 36th (Ulster) Division. The site was bought for Toc H in the 1920s by Lord Wakefield and is now known as 'The Pool of Peace'. Close by is Lone Tree Cemetery and good views of the Messines Ridge battlefield.
