Battlefield Guide - Hooge Crater Hooge was the scene of terrific fighting throughout the Great War, but especially in 1915 when the ground around the hamlet was fought over continuously. Mines were exploded frequently, the largest bring the Hooge Crater. The ground was captured in the opening phase of Third Ypres in July 1917. Hooge Crater Cafe Museum is built in an old school and chapel, close to the site of the 1915 crater and opposite Hooge Crater Cemetery. It houses an incredible collection of Great War uniforms and memorabilia, and the only permanent Diggers exhibition outlining the archaeological work carried out at Boesinghe. The cafe serves food and drink; group visits by appointment. Open every day except Monday.
