Battlefield Guide - Bayernwald Bayernwald, or Croonaert Wood to the British, was a small copse behind the German front line on the Messines Ridge close to the village of Wytschaete. Adolf Hitler fought here in 1914/15. It was captured on 7th June 1917 by elements of the 19th (Western) Division. The restored trenches on this site are a joint project of the Kemmel Tourist Office and local archaeologists. They recreated a German trench system from the mid-war period using original plans, and incorporating original bunkers and positions within the wood. A small un-manned visitors centre has a very good bronze relief map of the Messines battlefield, and many interesting photographs of the site during the war. All visits are arranged via the Kemmel Tourist office.
